Antonio Pierce Goodbye and Good Riddance
Antonio Pierce has been released from the New York Giants and as a fan living in New York I have been surprised to hear how many fans are upset by this move. I am not one of them. I think the Giant defense just got better by his departure.
Antonio Pierce was a good middle linebacker for the G-Men 2 years ago, but now he is a liability on the field. He has become very slow and soft, two very bad traits for a middle linebacker. The last two seasons he has been getting run over by running backs, easily blocked by lineman, and unable to pursue anyone on the field. Pierce was a large part of the problem with the defense this past season as the Middle Linebacker is the Quarterback of the Defense and certainly didn’t lead on the field.
It hasn’t helped that he is a very vocal player who can no longer live up to the self-absorbed hype he spews in the locker room and in the press. Let us not forget that he was tied up in the Plaxico Burress mess that spilled over into training camp sue to court dates thus causing further distractions that should have been removed when Plaxico was released.
In fairness I will say that he was very classy in the press following the release expressing his gratitude to the organization during his time in New York and that he has nothing but good memories during his Giant tenure. Class aside, I am happy to see Pierce go and wish him nothing but luck if he finds a new home, though I am happy he will not continue to drag the Giants down.
